A fleet of Okeanos Vaka Motus arrived in Yap, Federated States of Micronesia to a traditional welcoming ceremony for the captains and crew who sailed more than 4,000 miles. As the fleet sailed to port, the voice over loudspeaker said: “Yap is the land of the navigators and these three sailing canoes came here to honor our tradition and support us as we live our tradition.”
Two of the vakas will stay in Yap for sea trials to learn how they can be used to provide day to day service to remote outer island communities.
The traditional welcoming ceremony was led by master navigator Ali Haleyalur.
